Season after season, the evolution of nutrition gives way to new trends as we gain a better understanding of food and seek more holistic initiatives when planning our plates.

Without dismissing the trendy acai berry, seaweed, and tuna poke, I more so advocate for overlooked foods that may not be in the spotlight. Kiwifruit, for example, is an undervalued superfood that is finally emerging as the “it” fruit of the season.

Kiwis impress me with their outstanding vitamin C value. Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit, in particular, contain three times the immune-boosting vitamin C of oranges. Kiwifruit are also rich in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that combats inflammation caused by stress, smoking, pollution, and consumption of fried foods and refined sugars.
For weight management, kiwifruit should certainly be a dietary staple. Kiwis are naturally low in calories and make an ideal snack component. Also, the fibre in kiwis swell when ingested, promoting sustained satiety and satisfaction. What’s even greater is that kiwifruit are low on the glycemic index, so they will not spike your blood sugar levels upon intake. Therefore, eating kiwis will not trigger hunger cues and cravings – a key challenge that “chronic snackers” face when trying to manage their weight.
Trends come and go, but, with all of its valuable nutritional attributes, I think that the humble kiwi should be here to stay!
